Founded in 1992, the Riverbend Model Railroad Club is the proud builder of two HO scale model railroads.
The first layout is the 32' x 22' double level HO scale Superior Northern Railroad. Our model railroad represents Upper Peninsula railroading in the year 1962 with some "modeler's license" to allow the presence of the last of the steam locomotives as well as a few newer diesel locomotives. The principle industries on the railroad are pulp wood, paper products, and, of course, iron ore mining. The Superior Northern mainline runs from Sault St. Marie, Michigan to Duluth, Minnesota. We model the towns of Sault St. Marie, Soo Junction, St. Ignace, Newberry, Munising, Marquette, Negaunee, Ishpeming, and Palmer. Some points of interest are the Chief Wawatam railroad car ferry at St. Ignace, the International Bridges at Sault St. Marie, and the DSS&A ore dock and ore boat at Marquette. The second HO scale layout is a modular layout. The vision is to construct modules in accordance with the Free-mo guidelines that would interface with other Free-mo groups throughout the US and Canada. The theme for the club modules begins in downtown Grand Rapids, with the Grand Rapids and Indiana RR (GR&I, Ft. Wayne division of the PRR) train shed continuing north to Mackinaw City, MI and south to Ft. Wayne, IN circa 1949. This branch line interfaces with the Pere Marquette RR (C&O), Michigan Central RR (NYC) and the Grand Trunk Western, along with a few others. Although this is the general theme, there are no road/theme/time period limitations imposed on individual's modules. |
